Lincoln battled to be the first non league team be in the semi-final since the FA cup started back in 1871. Their astonishing run continued as they destroyed Arsenal in a very one-sided contest. Arsenal had very little confidence going into the game as Lincoln were already on an 18 win streak, and Arsenal were wounded from their loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Lincoln, 88 places below their premier league opposition, held their own for much of the first half and even came close to scoring, when Nathan Arnold’s effort was saved by Petr Cech. Lincoln then broke the deadlock a minute before half time when Alan Power’s spectacular scorpion kick flew into the top right corner.
Danny Cowley’s interview at half time was full of praise for his team. “We’ve got a huge chance to win this because our team work is exceptional,” Cowley said with confidence.
In the second half, in the 51st minute, Lincoln doubled their lead from Terry Hawkridge’s powerful bullet header which almost broke the net.
Moments later, an Alexis Sanchez foul on Terry Hawkridge resulted in a penalty. Sam Habergham dispatched the penalty with ease into the bottom left corner.
Luke Waterfall added a brilliant fourth, expertly placing the ball beyond Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech’s reach, before Nathan Arnold doubled his tally and completed the win when he tapped in from Raggett’s cross.
Lincoln continued to keep possession of the ball which frustrated Arsenal and made them make error after error. The win sees Lincoln progress into the semi final.
