A day in the life of Poppy Popcorn

Dear Diary,

Today I broke free! Unfortunately, that’s not all that happened. Firstly, my family and I were

taken from the shop. Our bag was ripped open and we were transferred to a big bowl and off

to the ‘microwave’ as the giants call it. Soon later, I was no longer a baby! Although it didn’t

last long, it was great. Only a few minutes later, my family were being lifted by massive

hands until the human shouted:

“Ugh, it’s bland!” To be honest, I was offended but when he came back smothering us in salt

I forgot it all. The hand, enormous and clammy, grabbed me as if I had wronged it.

Struggling mightily, I fought against the strength until it went dark. The next thing is saw was

ugly yellow teeth right in my face - that was my last moment whole. I saw my bottom half

coated in thick, slimy stuff going out of the mouth and suddenly I was, too. I think that saliva

was why my journey down the oes-oph- agus was so quick and easy. I think that was the first

stage: ingestion.

All of a sudden, I was submerged into a burning pool of lava (it turned out to be acid

actually). Initially, I thought I was fine but I was yet to experience the pain. After an

uncomfortable bottom-less few hours, I was released with my new best friend, Peppa

Popcorn. She too was not a whole kernel. Now I was getting worried, that was digestion.

Together, Peppa and I sailed to the small intestine. If I could have skipped that bit; I

would’ve, it just hurt so much. I was stripped of life- all my nutrients were taken so I am now

just a lump of plain. At least absorption was over, but now it was elimination! It took me a

few hours to recover so I can’t remember much after that but I do remember a strained

voice and me; a brown lump, being shot out, flushed and meeting new friends in the

sewers: Peppa (again), Percy and Lemony.
